A carbon footprint is a "measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide.
The carbon content released during the energy conversion process reaches the atmosphere and is deemed to be responsible for the global warming process (i.e. climate change).
A Carbon Footprint is made up of the sum of two parts, the direct / primary footprint and the indirect / secondary footprint.
1. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including domestic energy consumption and transportation (e.g. car and plane).
2. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use - those associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown.
Ways to reduce your carbon footprint

Fill your dish washer and washing machine with a full load - this will save you water, electricity, and washing powder
Reduce your consumption of meat
Don't buy bottled water if your tap water is safe to drink (especially if it has been shipped from far away)
Buy local fruit and vegetables, or even try growing your own
Don't buy fresh fruit and vegetables which are out of season, they may have been flown in
Try to buy products made closer to home (look out and avoid items that are made in the distant lands)
Buy organic produce
Switching to green energy is one of the easiest and quickest ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
Tips on reducing your primary carbon footprint
do not travel by air during holidays.
sign up to renewable energy.
use public transport as much as possible.
Tips to reduce your secondary footprint
reduce your consumption of meat, especially red meat.
check the clothes label before buying .
avoid goods and services that have unnecessary packaging.
I conclude that carbon footprint harms the planet more than doing good to the planet.
